Ambition was key - Jackie

Jun 21 2005

NEW signing Jackie McNamara has set his sights on helping Wolves reach the Premiership after signing a two-year deal.

The 31-year-old left behind the prospect of Champions League football with Celtic to join Glenn Hoddle's Championship hopefuls.

And the utility man claimed that the Wolves boss had helped convince him to end his decade long spell at Celtic and help spearhead the Molineux club's push for promotion.

"I am looking forward to the challenge here," said McNamara, who played 357 games for the Parkhead club.

"A big part of me coming here was the fact that they made me feel very important. Glenn made me feel very welcome and sold the ambition of the club and the style of football he wants to play.

"It is down to the manager where I play but I would see myself maybe as right-back or on the right side of midfield.

"I am hoping to play in the Premiership.

"This is a Premiership club at the wrong level and hopefully we will get there and I can have a shot at it.

"Working with Glenn Hoddle was also a big factor. I spoke to Kenny Miller and he speaks very highly of him.

"It was a massive thing for me to work under a manager like that with his ambitions." He also admitted that Celtic's hesitancy in deciding his future had a major bearing in his decision.

"It was a big wrench to leave Celtic.

"I had 10 great years there, but I think they gambled on my loyalty," added

the 29-cap Scotland international.

"It's disappointing that they didn't treat me a bit better but that's football.

"Had it been done months ago it might have been different but they waited until two weeks into the off-season-and Wolves showed a great desire to get my services.

"That's what's made my mind up here.

"I had been speaking to Wolves for just over a week and on Monday I gave them my word that I would sign."
