Jones' Cardiff link

May 24 2005

FORMER Wolves boss Dave Jones is poised for an imminent return to management with Cardiff City.

Sources in Wales suggest Jones has been lined up to take over the hot-seat vacated by Lennie Lawrence, effectively pushed out after three-and-a-half years at Ninian Park albeit now remaining at the club in a consultancy role.

But that has opened the door for Jones to take over, after it emerged at the end of last week that he had already held a meeting with Cardiff owner Sam Hamman and new chief executive Peter Ridsdale.

The picture should become clearer over the next few days but reports from the Principality suggest Jones is the man who will be charged with the task of cementing Cardiff's Championship berth after a troubled last season.

It's without doubt that the job would appeal to Jones's keen interest in 'rebuilding' clubs as witnessed throughout his career at Stockport, Southampton and Wolves.

During his four years at Molineux, he completely reshaped the squad and finally became the first manager in two decades to lead the club to the top flight, ironically in Cardiff in the 2003 play-off final with Sheffield United.
