Darren Wrack today revealed that Walsall's players are "boiling" with frustration at the results that have left the Saddlers ailing just above the League One relegation line.
Life following the drop last May has started in prickly fashion for the Saddlers with just two wins from nine games.
It adds up to a tough start to Paul Merson's career in charge - so tough the manager publicly questioned his future after the 1-0 defeat at Chesterfield last Saturday.
At the final whistle at Saltergate some of the 800 travelling Walsall fans made their impatience clear.
With the Saddlers' season still stuck in neutral, it's a case of frustration all round. And, Wrack insists, for noone more than the players who deliver the results on which Merson is judged.
"Inside you are just boiling over because we want to get the right results so much. It's that important because, as players, we know it's down to us.
"We've played some decent stuff at times and, like at Chesterfield, created more than enough chances to win.
"But that's no good. We know we've got to get results. That's what the chairman is going to look at and it's what the supporters will look at."
Merson was stung by the fans' reaction at Saltergate but Wracks insists the players must take responsibility.
"The supporters have every right to have a go because they pay their money," he said. "But they've got to remember the gaffer is new to management. Everything's not going to come right overnight. Just because we've come down doesn't give us the right to go straight back up.
"Hopefully we will because there is a long way to go. But we've got to go out and prove to the supporters that the gaffer is doing it right and playing the right way. It's down to us."
