Paul Merson will be out for a spot of revenge when he takes his Walsall team to north Wales to face Wrexham on Saturday. First and foremost the Saddlers manager wants his team to end their bleak winless away record and continue the massive improvement they showed in last weekend's home win over Colchester. But he's also got some egg to wipe off his face from a visit to the Racecourse he would rather forget. January 4, 1992. One of the most stunning FA Cup shocks of all time. Wrexham 2 Arsenal 1. That's Wrexham who had finished bottom of the Fourth Division the previous season 2, League Champions Arsenal 1. It went straight into FA Cup folklore. Into the last seven minutes the Gunners led through Alan Smith's goal (from a Merson cross). Then Tony Adams conceded a free-kick 25 yards out and 37-year-old former Manchester United midfielder Mickey Thomas sent a piledriver beyond David Seaman into the top corner. The Racecourse went wild. And even wilder when Steve Watkin netted an injury-time winner. "What a game that was," said Merson. "We were champs at the time and absolutely battered them for 90 minutes. But we didn't kill them off and then Micky Thomas steps up near the end and scores with a screamer. "That had us worried because the replay would have been on the Tuesday night and Tuesday was our main drinking night! "But they scored again and I think you could say Wrexham's fans were happy. It was a classic giant-killing." The atmosphere at the upfor-sale Racecourse Ground will be rather less hot for the Saddlers' visit on Saturday. And Merson would love it to stay that way all afternoon. Walsall played superbly to beat Colchester last weekend but a first away win of the season would really suggest the corner has been turned. "The Colchester game was a start but that is all," Merson said. "Now we've got to go to Wrexham and get a result "We've got a huge week coming up with Wrexham and then home games with Luton and Bristol City. "They are three tough games which give us a great opportunity to put our bad start behind us." Good news for Merson is that goalkeeper Joe Murphy's groin injury has responded well to treatment and he should be fit to face Wrexham. |
