Whether you're in Halls of residence, a flat of your own, or sharing a house, make sure you keep hold of your stuff.
Houses in multiple occupation (HMO) are prime targets for burglary, and certain areas of all towns and cities are more prone than others.
Firstly, if you are worried about a particular area when you visit a property, ask around, or check with your insurance company to see if it's a high-risk area.
Wherever you decide to move - always insure your belongings, either through a specialist insurance company (i.e. Endsleigh who have many branches on or near campus), or through your bank.
Don't leave front and back doors open, even if you are in the house.
If you have an alarm installed - use it (and hide the key / number).
Don't answer the front door late at night without asking who is there first.
If you return home and suspect a break-in, do not go in - contact the Police.
If you suspect a break-in while you are in the house - make as much noise as possible and contact the Police.
Put a light on a timer switch if the house is empty over long periods. If you get on with your neighbours, ask them to keep a check on it, turning lights on and off in the mornings/evenings.
In the event of nuisance phone calls stay calm, leave the phone off the hook, and report repeated calls to the telephone company.
