Josiah Mason College caters for over 4,000 adult students in addition to its sixth form provision. The majority of students study part-time courses in the daytime, evening and weekends, but around 400 each year enrol on full-time courses such as IT, childcare or TV, radio and journalism, as well as access and HE programmes. Among the students enrolling this May are would-be computer technicians, website designers, digital photographers, mentors, teachers, team leaders and assessors. Some just want to brush-up their skills, others are seeking promotions at work and many are returning to education in order to get a new job. JMC offers child-friendly hours and help with travel and childcare costs can be accessed on your behalf where applicable. Geraldine Dowling, aged 39, is one of many JMC students to make the life-changing decision to return to education after putting her career on hold to bring up her two young children. Geraldine saw teaching as a rewarding career and something she would enjoy doing. She knew, however, that she had to acquire some skills first, and computing appealed to her. She completed four IT qualifications at Josiah Mason College, starting with City & Guilds 7262 e-Quals certificate, working her way up to the advanced diploma. She went on to take the Teaching Adult Learners certificate (Fento) and her hard work and dedication paid off when she was offered a job teaching the European computing driving licence at JMC. She said: "My dreams have finally come true. I devoted the last ten years of my life to my children and I'm now doing something for myself, thanks to JMC. "The tutors are friendly, supportive and have helped build up my confidence."
