Two SBC adult learners have scooped silver medals in the Birmingham Community College Five Star Awards. Melanie Dawkins, who is studying for a diploma in care, has been out of full-time education for more than 20 years. After working in industry and as a special constable in Jamaica, Melanie came to study in the UK two years ago. She managed to balance her academic studies with bringing up three young children, and is now looking forward to becoming a nurse. James Hobbs is studying to gain vital skills for his voluntary work. The NCFE working in your community qualification helps him with his work staffing a charity helpline for young people. Principal Alan Birks said: "More than 80 per cent of our 25,000 students are adults and Melanie and James are two examples of the many successes by SBC students as a result of hard-work and commitment."
