Sunday Mercury launches Save A Baby campaign

The Sunday Mercury has launched a special Christmas charity campaign to help save the lives of children born prematurely at the city's flagship maternity hospital. Lifestyle Editor ZOE CHAMBERLAIN reports...

SIX in every 10 premature babies leaving Birmingham Women's Hospital would not have survived 10 years ago.

It's a startling statistic which shows just how much care and treatment has improved - but it could be even better.

The Sunday Mercury has joined forces with the flagship hospital to get even more babies home safely in the future.

Our Save A Baby campaign encourages everyone to spare a thought, and a couple of pounds, for babies and their parents at the hospital this Christmas.

Just a small donation can help buy one of the items on the hospital's Christmas wish list.

"Tiny miracles happen every day here," says Susan Thorn, associate director of fundraising at the hospital. "Research, development and new equipment are helping us to help more families, but we would like to do even more.

"Christmas can be a very difficult time for families in hospital.

"At this time of year, when presents for children are high in everyone's thoughts, we'd be grateful if you could add us to your shopping list by buying just one gift from our wish list, or making a donation towards a larger item."

The Sunday Mercury's campaign is part of our WonderKids scheme, which honours children of courage.

Sponsored by Legal & General, we also raise children's health, education and community issues throughout the year.

The Birmingham Women's Hospital, based in Edgbaston, treats more than 50,000 patients a year and delivers over 7,000 babies.

Babies from all over the UK are sent to the hospital for specialist care.

Here's how you can help.

You can find out more about Birmingham Women's Hospital by visiting www.bwhct.nhs.uk.

The Sunday Mercury will be printing a list of names of everyone who has pledged their support to the campaign - just our way of saying thank you for helping save a baby's life.
