Review: Wet, Wet, Wet at the NEC

Dec 13 2004

By Helen Gabriel, Birmingham Post

Wet, Wet, Wet, Birmingham NEC

Love was all around us at the NEC last night as hoards of thirty-something women screamed of their passion for 80s pop sensation Wet, Wet, Wet.

A very excited Marti Pellow and band took to the stage in Birmingham with their greatest hits tour - their first since an acrimonious split over money in 1997 and Pellow's subsequent battle with heroin addiction.

But for the band and their fans it was almost like they had never been away as they opened the show with Sweet Little Mystery.

Recent single All I Want featured early on the bill, closely followed by classics Angel Eyes and Wishing I Was Lucky.

The Wets performed a variety of old and new material which was all well received.

But it was while performing hit Temptation that Marti Pellow really seemed to start enjoying himself.

Not all the hit singles were there, but surprisingly some of the older album tracks such as East of the River made it into the set.

Never a fan of ballads, my favourite was a funky rendition of the naughty Lip Service.

There was plenty of banter and innuendo from the band as the crowd screamed at Pellow to get his kit off.

I felt slightly queasy at the thought as he's almost old enough to be my father, but thankfully that was one temptation he resisted.

A superb encore included a comic cover version of Last Christmas and the soulful I Can Give You Everything .

But just as I thought the night was about to end on a high note came the nightmare I had been dreading.

The show ended drably with Love Is All Around, which even ten years on from its 15-week reign at the top of the charts is still the only song more annoying than Joe Pasquale's jungle rendition of "I know a song that'll get on your nerves".
