Andy Williams @ Symphony Hall

Jul 5 2007

By Andy Coleman, Birmingham Mail

ANDY Williams says his voice gets stronger the more he sings so with this Birmingham show coming near the end of an 11-date UK tour, we knew we were in for a treat. And we were not disappointed.

The 79-year-old hit those high notes and lived up to his King of Cool tag with a seemingly effortless Independence Day performance.

As slick as ever, he was helped by a fantastic ten piece band and four backing singers who created a wall of sound during ambitious pieces like MacArthur Park, and he now has a new CD to promote.

Alongside the lounge classics Music To Watch Girls By and Can't Get Used To Losing You we had Lady In Red and She's The One from I Don't Remember Growing Up, a collection of Andy's favourite songs.

Also making their Birmingham debut were Breaking Up Is Hard To Do, Just To See Her Again and Have I Told You Lately That I Love You? During the Mariah Carey/ Boyz II Men cover One Sweet Day a sombre, and rather depressing, video of his showbiz chums who have died was shown.

Not that easy listening fans were short-changed in the two hour concert. A couple of medleys of favourites meant the song count still equalled value for money.
