Karen's voice is the star of show

Jun 27 2008

With Pete Willow

COVENTRY singer Karen Killeen has been rediscovering her own skills as a song-writer and guitarist complete with backing band.

Performing at folk clubs from primary school age, Karen's musical talent has been encouraged by such folk music heroes as Vin Garbutt, Dougie McLean and Malc Stent.

Recent years saw her working with covers band Bus Stop until the untimely death of her singing partner Steve in January.

Now she is experiencing a renaissance with her own singing. She appears tonight at a charity concert in Binley Woods Village Hall with Colin Jones on lead guitar, Carl Jones on drums and Karen's son Matt Weeden on bass.

The show starts at 7.30pm and also features Irish singer Colin King, contemporary duo June and Bernie Howes and singer of classic Woody Guthrie numbers, Eddie Player.

* Admission £5. Details 024 7654 2417.

* FOLK and country duo Blackheart have performed more then 150 concerts and their song 94 Years was chosen as Spotlight Song of the Day for Fathers' Day on BBC Radio 2 - and it's still only 12 months into their career.

Chrissy Mostyn and Richard Pilkington appear on Monday at the Warwick Folk Club, performing original material from their highly praised debut album, Indigo. The club meets at the Warwick Arms at 8pm.

* Details 01926 403228.

* NEWS of the death of the creator of beautifully-crafted whistles, Bernard Overton, has spread around the world of folk and jazz.

He was based in Brinklow and worked with top Irish folk musician Finbar Furey to produce the famous lower-keyed Overton whistles.

He made his first whistle 40 years ago, introducing a sweet new sound to the repertoire of many leading folk bands.

Also noted for his skills on boogie-woogie piano, Bernard remained an active supporter of local folk clubs throughout his life. His funeral takes place on Monday at Canley Crematorium.
