Comic Potential, Highbury Theatre, Sutton Coldfield

Jun 19 2008

By Tony Collins, Birmingham Mail

ALAN Ayckbourn's comic genius knows no bounds as he creates a future where androids are built to act in television soaps.

His wickedly amusing satire on television, and the people who run it, is enchantingly told through jobbing actoid Jacie Triplethree, who bypasses her/its programming to display a sense of comic timing.

But Ayckbourn's innovative comedy, first performed a decade ago, does not stop there, as aspiring writer Adam Trainsmith gradually falls for the machine.

Jayne Lunn is a sheer delight as the android who struggles with her new emotions while constantly reciting choice lines from past scripts.

Her dancing to ZZ Top is particularly impressive.

Performances continue until June 28.
